CHAPTER 27

PAM HEADS WEST

Pam had gotten up earlier than usual. The combination of excitement and nerves regarding her trip to San Diego had made for a restless night. She jumped into the shower. The hot water raining down on her body had a calming effect. She blew-dry her hair and applied makeup, all the while wondering what was going on out west. Dressing quickly, Pam gathered her purse, carry-on, and suitcase and deposited them by the front door.

Maybe there’ll be good news when I arrive, she thought.

Pam went into the kitchen and got the coffee pot going. She put two whole wheat English muffins in the toaster for a quick breakfast as Benny walked in and sat down to join her.

“Call me when you land in San Diego,” he said. “Don’t get talked into doing anything crazy when you’re out there.”

Pam nodded as she put peanut butter and jelly on the toasted muffins.

“Bert told me the situation isn’t good, but he’s remaining positive.”

“I’m going out there to help my brother,” Pam reminded him. “I’ll be careful and not take any chances, though.” Pam meant what she said, but knew in her heart she’d do whatever was asked. “I don’t know how Steve and Diane can take it. I’d be losing my mind if I was in their situation. It’s just unbelievable.”

“The circumstances might be horrible, but, like Steve and Diane, you’d do whatever it took to find your child. There’s no point in going crazy. Now’s the time for clear thinking and utilizing all the resources available.”

Benny’s ability to stay calm and think through a situation was one of the many things Pam loved about him. He was the one she wanted around in a crisis.

“I packed last night, so I’m ready to go,” Pam said. “Just say a prayer we find Amanda. And soon. We need a good ending to this mess.”

“I will do that. Keep me posted. Love you.” He kissed Pam good-bye as he left for work. Benny didn’t have a good feeling about the situation.
